Tell Congress to Return Fairness to Tax Code

Dear friends,

Tax Day Protests
Tell your Representative to return fairness to the tax code.

There’s a revolution going on in America. Today, while millions of Americans were mailing their annual tax payments, USAction/TrueMajority members are working with US Uncut to stage one of the largest Tax Day protests in American history (check out the photos).

All over the country, citizens are demanding to know, “If we can pay our taxes, why can’t America’s richest corporations and CEOs pay theirs?” It’s a fair question that many people are starting to ask, and the media and Congress are taking notice. Major news outlets are reporting on the protests in the streets,1 and now progressive champion Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) has introduced a powerful bill to make millionaires and billionaires pay their fair share.2

Congress needs to hear from you. Tell your Representative to sign on for tax fairness.

There’s a lot of misinformation out there. The GOP and the mainstream media tell us we have a deficit problem because we spend too much money on education, jobs and the poor. In fact, just last Friday, House Republicans passed a budget that would end Medicare as we know it and end health care and other important services for tens of millions of Americans.

But the truth is that we have a revenue problem — one that we can fix by making corporations and millionaires pay their fair share.

Rep. Schakowsky and 13 other Representatives in Congress have had the courage to sign her bill, which is a good start.3 If we want this bill to become law, we need your Representative to help too. Find out if your Representative supports making millionaires pay their fair share of the taxes, and if not, then tell them to get on board right away.

Together, we’ll build a more fair tax code and a stronger America.

Sincerely,
Darcy Scott Martin

Had you read this description of what actually happened during one of the Fukushima reactor explosions ANYWHERE in the USA mainstream media?

UK Nuclear Expert: “There were a huge number of spent fuel rods sitting on top of the reactor, so when it exploded, and everybody saw it exploding, all those fuel rods went up in the air. And as we now know, it has melted down.”

Support Senate Rules Reform =PLEASE CALL=

Act Now to Support Senate Rules Reform
Call your Senators at 1-877-426-8013 tomorrow and Wednesday.

The abuse of Senate rules has resulted in unprecedented obstruction by a Republican minority. Filibusters, threats of filibusters, and secret holds have been used to obstruct, delay, and stifle debate in the Senate, and because of this, the 111th Congress adjourned after confirming only 58% of President Obama’s circuit and district court nominees, a record low.

It’s time to reform Senate rules. Under the current broken system, Senators do not even have stand and speak to block a bill. The minority leader merely has to refuse to allow a bill to be brought to the floor by unanimous consent, forcing supporters to find 60 votes to even move the bill to debate. The process eats up scarce Senate floor time, of which there is only so much in any congressional session. Notably, every Senate Democrat has signed a letter supporting filibuster reform, and many others are calling for change, so the prospects of reform are looking brighter than they have in years.

When the 112th Congress takes office on January 5, the Senate will have one opportunity to reform the rules with a simple majority vote. Accordingly, we need you to join us in a national call-in to support Senate rules reform on January 4 and 5. Tell your Senator to support the following changes:

  • Give Senators only one opportunity-not four-to filibuster legislation.
  • Require Senators to be present on the floor in order to initiate and continue a filibuster.
  • Reform the process for judicial and executive nominees by ending secret holds and shortening the time for debate.

Call 1-877-426-8013 and tell your Senators to support rules reform now!

Dear Congress: Don’t let the lies kill bank reform =PLEASE SIGN=

Dear Congress: Don’t let the lies kill bank reform

The big banks are running misleading ads claiming that our plan to clamp down on the big banks, including requiring them to pay back the money we gave them before they give themselves bonuses, is a $4 trillion bail out.[1]

These ads are the product of pollster Frank Luntz, the same man helping special interests kill health care reform.  Last week, a leaked memo written by Mr. Luntz told opponents that bank reform is so popular the only way to fight it is to make stuff up — and he generously offered his suggestions.

Please make sure your Congressmember hears from you and as many of your friends and family members as possible.  We need them to know: we’re not buying the big banks’ misleading propaganda, and we expect our leaders to stand up to the banks and pass reform.

Dick Cheney confessed to a war crime. Prosecute him!!

Dear friends,

On ABC News last weekend, former Vice President Dick Cheney confessed to playing a key role in the commission of war crimes during the Bush administration.

"I was a big supporter of waterboarding," boasted Cheney.

Waterboarding is torture and a war crime. The UN Convention on Torture, the Geneva Conventions, the Red Cross, and constitutional governments around the globe agree on this point of law. More to the point, Attorney General Eric Holder has stated publicly that waterboarding is torture. Cheney’s confession legally obligates Holder to prosecute him.

Cheney apologists will no doubt turn a blind eye to this. But this is the law, plain and simple. The case has been laid out in detail by Andrew Sullivan1, Glenn Greenwald2, and Scott Horton3.

By publicly confessing his role in illegal U.S torture programs, Cheney has created an extraordinary opportunity to hold the Bush administration accountable for its crimes. One that must not — and indeed legally cannot — be ignored.

Tell Attorney General Holder that he must prosecute Dick Cheney for torture.

Public Option Whip List — Has your senator taken a stand?

Public Option Whip List — Has your senator taken a stand?

Friends,

On Monday, four bold senators — led by Colorado’s Mike Bennet — wrote a letter calling on Majority Leader Harry Reid to pass the public health insurance option through "reconciliation," which only needs a simple majority in the Senate.

Since then, 18 senators have signed the letter, with more joining each day. The momentum is amazing.

Will you click here to write a thank-you note to these senators for showing leadership on the public option? We’ll deliver your note to the senators so they can see how important this issue is — to all of us.

Senators Bennet, Brown, Merkley, Gillibrand, Kerry, Leahy, Franken, Whitehouse, Burris, Sanders, Feinstein, Reed, Boxer, Udall, Mikulski, Lautenberg, Schumer, and Shaheen have shown bold leadership — asking Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to pass the public health insurance option through reconciliation, which only needs a simple majority in the Senate.

Can you thank them for showing leadership on the public option? We’ll deliver your signature (and any note you write) directly to the senators.
